Women of Wonder Day 2011by *Protokitty

I did this for the Women of Wonder Day (Formerly Wonder Woman Day) charity auction. Since, I first heard about it many years ago, I've been wanting to donate a piece. I've finally gotten around to do one!

It's for raising funds for Domestic Violence charity programs. A good cause so check it out.

Wonder of Woman Day is on October 30th, 2011.

Done in copic markers, ink, pro white, charcoal and oil pencils.

I think this is the best Wonder Woman portrait I've ever seen. She doesn't seem to be posing nor being stylized to be sex-linked. She's serious. Most portraits with superheroines from the mainstream comics tend to be stylized to arouse or look sexy, but it doesn't make sense all the time. It's sickening and ironic, in particular, to see Wonder Woman portrayed as a sexual object, while she questions the very nature of such portrayals of women outside the Amazon society.

Wonder Woman is one of the few comic book characters who has transcended beyond just being a comics and cartoon character and has become an icon in American culture. She's become symbolic, most notably for female empowerment, and I believe she should be depicted as such. Strong, empowered and dignified.
