Wonder Woman Costume by Protokitty Wonder Woman Costume by Protokitty
Finished this a while ago but forgot to put it up.

When Jim Lee's new costume for Wonder Woman was announced, it created quite a buzz. Quite a few people weren't happy with it including one of my good friends who wrote a short tirade about it. So I decided have a crack at it. (He's still not happy with it tho, can't please everybody!) I actually have no problems with Jim Lee's redesign except I think her WW should be larger (it is an iconic symbol). I noticed a whole bunch of artists on deviantArt also did their own version of Wonder Woman's costume and alot of them were really great! It seems like a consensus that pants are always a good idea for an action hero. Someone should make a group gallery dedicated to Wondy's costumes.

Inked in Manga Studio (I'm trying to learn it) and colored in Photoshop. This is my first attempt at trying cel style shading, so I'm not sure I got it quite right but it was an interesting experiment.

I think she should have some armor on her shoulders, but otherwise I don't see a problem with it.
Also, finally, pants!

This is a very beautiful redesign. Though I think it would be better if she also had one of those armored belts/girdles.

Why were people unhappy? Not enough leg showing? But that's what makes this version better—she's not running around in an improbable strapless swimsuit. She has some armor now. And her battleax is frickin' sweet.

Very, very nice. Simple, elegant. Not too busty. I like, but it won't sell ;-)

Cool Battle Axe!!!
JediOrSithAH Featured By Owner Apr 20, 2012
Wow! This seems actually real and rational. Although I don't think Wonder Woman would use a battle-axe with a shield. She's strong, but it's a two-handed weapon.

Now this is awesome. Something in the back of my mind didn't like the original costume honestly. It didn't seem practical for a Greek warrior princess.

Your first time trying cel-styled shading? You've could have fooled me. This is a beautiful drawing of Wonder Woman.

It retains the classic elements without being a throwback. It adds detail without being too busy. It's practical without looking like it's made for war, which is perfect for a ambassador of peace.

Jupiterzguy Featured By Owner Mar 7, 2011
That is the most perfect version of her axe I've ever seen. Seriously, that design is so perfect it ought to have been in the comics already! I really like the white w on the bottom of her top as well.
Protokitty Featured By Owner Mar 8, 2011
Aah, thank you but I can't take total credit on the axe design, there was a Wonder Woman action figure with a similar axe. Much like the costume I just added my own touch to it.

And you found one of hidden W's! There's a bunch of W's (other than her obvious WW chest plate) peppered through out her costume, can you find more?
Jupiterzguy Featured By Owner Mar 8, 2011
Hmm, let's see.

Well, first off there's her symbol, which could be any number of W's from 1-3.

Then there's the =w= on the axe, which, again, could be a couple depending on how you counted. Where the haft meets the head also makes a w.

There's also the w on her greaves, as well as the negative space above and below it which would technically form w's as well.

From the way she's standing, the piping on her pants makes a w.

I keep eying the inscribed lines on her bracers, but can't quite parse a w from what I can see of them.

Oh, the curve of her tiara above her brow kind of makes a lowercase one if you squint.

So, how'd I do? ^_^
Protokitty Featured By Owner Mar 20, 2011
Whoa, you found way more than I actually put in! The only real hidden W was the piping on her pants. (No W's on the bracelets or tiara) Good Job!

Not THIS would have been a WONDERFUL costume redesign! I love it.
hatefulevilscumface Featured By Owner Jan 23, 2011
This is great! The best part is that Wonder Woman's bottoms have evolved from a skirt, to jogging shorts and then to the bathing suit bottom (and unfortunately DC editors don't realize they have the authority to tell artists not to draw it like a thong) so the pants look you've chosen is no bigger a change than any previous one...
LexiKimble Featured By Owner Jan 11, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Oooo, I really like this. I agree with you on all counts, the new costume is good (tons better than the star-spangled swimsuit), but the new one needs a lil "oomph" and yours definitely has that.
GinoDrone Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2011
I really love this.

I'd like to see some more variations on this idea.

Very nice design!
I like this over Jim lee's because it has enough of the old to be in character and more than enough of new stuff without looking like something out of American Gladiators. The one detail I didn't like I find it interferes with the rest of the design it's the leather belt that holds the lasso.
But overall amazing work!
